What is McTimoney Chiropractic?

McTimoney Chiropractic is a gentle, non-invasive technique that was developed by John McTimoney in the 1950's. The technique was originally used to treat humans but due to its benefits, was later adapted for animal treatments. The application of McTimoney consists of a series of high-velocity, low amplitude adjustments applied by the hands directly to sites of misalignment in the spine and pelvis.

What are misalignments?

Misalignments are carefully identified by your therapist using palpation of the neck, back and pelvis. They are characterised by a subtle displacement of the boney landmark usually caused by dysfunction and/ or imbalance in the soft tissues surrounding and attaching to that anatomical location. Misalignments can occur as a result of many reasons some of which include; posture, age, injuries (previous or current), trauma as well as work or sports. Signs your pet may have misalignments can vary but may include pain, reluctance towards normal exercise, reluctance to jump on or off furniture or into the car, stiffness and other subtle or marked changes in behaviour.

Should my dog have physio or chiropractic?

Each pet we see will undergo a thorough initial assessment to allow us to make the most appropriate treatment plan based on the animal's specific needs and the goals of overall treatment. With this in mind, some treatments may include a mixture of physio and chiropractic whereas others may be suited to one therapy. You should expect your pet to receive other manual therapies including massage during a chiropractic treatment as this often enhances treatment outcomes. Please contact us for case specific advice on treatment options.

Can my dog feel the adjustments?

The reason we love McTimoney Chiropractic is because it's effective but also very gentle and well accepted by most animals receiving treatment! Your pet will be able to feel the adjustments however, it should never be painful or initiate stress. Your therapist will begin treatment with a thorough assessment of your pet's body and determine the appropriateness of McTimoney treatment with consideration to their medical history. Rest assured, your pet's behaviour will be monitored throughout the assessment and treatment process to ensure their comfort and well-being is always prioritised.
